South Charleston, W.Va. – The Guinness World Records has confirmed that ACE Adventure Resorts set a world record for zip-lining on June 3, 2012. More than 183 qualified zip-liners barreled along a 203-foot cable at its mile-long zip line course, far out-numbering the previous record set by 122 participants in Germany in 2010.
Guinness recognized in a letter received by resort executives on Thursday, June 21, that the resort had "successfully set the new Guinness World Records title for ‘most people down a zip wire in one hour'," according to Beth Gill, marketing director for the resort. “We look forward to being included in their world-record reference book,” said Gill.
Expanded in 2011, the course follows the rim of the New River Gorge, carrying zip-liners through forest canopy high above an area of the park that descends to the New River.
“West Virginia is known for its world-class recreation, so it’s only fitting that we hold the world record for zip lining,” Gov. Tomblin said. “Congratulations to ACE Adventure Resort and all 183 zip line participants who officially put West Virginia in the world record book. This is a remarkable accomplishment for our state and all adventure seekers!”
Resort officials plan to commemorate the recognition with an event sometime in July. In addition, details of future renovations to the resort’s network of zip lines, which have become a primary attraction at the 1,500-acre vacation park, are also planned.
“The Division of Tourism is happy to congratulate ACE Adventure Resorts and this fantastic accomplishment,” said Betty Carver, Commissioner. “They have set the bar high and it is great that their efforts are officially recognized and soon to be documented in the record books!”
Established in 1980 as American-Canadian Expeditions, ACE guides more than 50,000 whitewater rafters on the New and Gauley rivers annually, and in 2010 was recognized as the largest adventure resort in North America by The Travel Channel.
ACE Adventure Resorts offers more than a dozen other outdoor-adventure activities at its adventure park, including hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, and ATV touring.
