 2014 REAP Recycling Assistance Grants awarded

West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection Cabinet Secretary Randy Huffman awarded grants worth $2 million to 40 recipients today through the REAP (Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan) Recycling Assistance Grants program.

Secretary Huffman presented the 2014 grants during a ceremony at the DEP’s Charleston headquarters. Grants were awarded to state solid waste authorities, county commissions, municipalities, private industries and nonprofit organizations.

Funding for the grant program is generated through the $1 assessment fee per ton of solid waste disposed at in-state landfills and is provided by West Virginia Code 22-15A-19(h) (1).

Following are the grant recipients:

BARBOUR COUNTY
Barbour County Solid Waste Authority $51,920

To purchase recycling trailers, safety equipment and to assist with personnel and building improvements for the ongoing county-wide program.

BOONE COUNTY
Boone County Solid Waste Authority $52,080

To purchase fuel for recycling trucks, baling wire, promotional items, recycling bags, office supplies and to assist with personnel, utilities and conference attendance for the ongoing county-wide program.

BROOKE COUNTY
Brooke County Solid Waste Authority $84,619.36

To assist with personnel, transportation costs, utilities, truck maintenance, conference attendance and to purchase fuel, recycling supplies and roll-offs for the ongoing county-wide program.

CABELL COUNTY
Marshall University Sustainability Department $34,200.99

To purchase an industrial paper shredder, installation and training for shredder and to assist with student collection wages for the university’s recycling program.


CALHOUN COUNTY
Calhoun County Solid Waste Authority $37,865

To assist with personnel, equipment maintenance, household battery recycling, crane inspection, utilities and to purchase fuel and rearview camera system on the box truck for the ongoing county-wide program.

To assist with the construction of two metal buildings for recycling at both transfer stations.

HANCOCK COUNTY
Hancock County Solid Waste Authority $25,000

To assist with personnel at the recycling center for the county’s program.

Belle, Town of $3,000

To purchase folding recycle bag stands, recycle bags and recycle bins for the town’s program.
