Animal Tracking is part of Woods Lore Workshop at Twin Falls State Park, January 14-16

12/23/2010

MULLENS, W.Va. – Tracking and woods lore at Twin Falls State Park is a winter adventure. The weekend of January 14-16 promises nature, drama, tracking, and history in outdoor and indoor settings.

“It’s an experience,” according to Doug Wood with Trails, Inc. “The weekend activities introduce attendees to an 18th century life style, when American Indians and European Americans lived closer to nature. Learn some of the skills that were necessary for everyday life, and learn of the cultural sharing that has made our modern lives richer.”

Twin Falls State Park has been the host of this hands-on living history weekends in the dead of winter for more than 10 years. Acting activities coordinator Ken Vance says “It is an awesome experience being outdoors and learning about animal tracking, food preparation and lifestyles of the 18th century and medicinal plant uses. It is a reality check of how life was in the 1700s in West Virginia.”

The weekend includes cultural sharing and hunting techniques of the Eastern Woodland Indians, “listen to the dark” night walks, paw print identification, “nose to the breeze and ear to the ground” walks, tracking skills of the 18th century, medicinals, and a native supper and discussion of food and clothing.

The workshop event is priced at $215 for two sharing a lodge room and includes all activities, two night’s lodging, a Native Supper (dinner) on Saturday evening and break refreshments. A workshop-only fee without lodging is $67 per person for the weekend.
