CHARLESTON, W.Va. – One talented fourth-grader and one talented fifth-grader will be named the big winners in the 2011 West Virginia Arbor Day Poster Contest. This year’s theme is “What Tree Is It?”
The contest is open to public, private and home schooling teachers in the Mountain State. The winning students each will receive a $50 U.S. Savings Bond from the West Virginia Forestry Association. An award ceremony will be held at the schools they attend and a tree will be planted in their honor.
“This is a great chance for students to show off their artistic talents and learn more about all the different types of trees growing in West Virginia’s forests,” says Andy Sheetz of the West Virginia Division of Forestry. “From apples to yellow poplars, our budding artists have plenty of trees to choose from to come up with an award-winning design.”
Officials at the Division of Forestry are accepting submissions now. The deadline for all entries is March 1, 2011.
Interested teachers should contact Sheetz at andy.i.sheetz.@wv.gov or 304.766.2899 for a poster contest guide that contains educational activities. Information may be also downloaded from http://www.wvforestry.com/arbor.cfm. Only posters that meet the contest rules will be eligible for prizes.
