BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. – April is a great time to start going outside again to enjoy springtime weather and learn about the outdoors and native critters. Cacapon State Park naturalist Renee Fincham invites visitors and local residents to take part in the nature and recreation weekend programs scheduled this month.
Cacapon State Park is in Morgan County and is located near Berkeley Springs on Route 522. The park celebrated 75 years of service in 2012 and is a traditional state park that features a lodge, vacation cabins, Robert Trent Jones golf course, horseback riding, lake swimming and fishing, a restaurant, hiking trails, nature center and an observation area with views of four states. Saturday, April 6
10:30 a.m. Refresh on the Ridge:
A perfect opportunity to get outside after a long winter. Meet the naturalist at the Nature Center to search out the sights and sounds of spring along the Ridge Trail. This trail is approximately 1½ miles with a few hills. (1 hour)
1 p.m. Furs, Fins & Scales:
Visit the Cacapon Nature Center to see the newest exhibits. The new displays can be viewed and the naturalist will be on hand to answer questions. (30 minutes)
Saturday, April 13
10 a.m. Budding Adventures:
This 3-mile hike along the Central Trail will be led by the park naturalist Renee Fincham. It’s a chance to exercise while enjoying the spring air!! Hike begins in the parking lot at the reservoir. (1½ hours)
1 p.m. Look for the “Bear Necessities”:
Join the naturalist in the Nature Center to learn the necessities of a bear’s life. We will view an eyewitness video on all different species of bears and their necessities. (30 minutes)
2 p.m. Spring Inspired Craft:
Young naturalists and those young at heart will have fun and create an impressive work of art. Then join the Naturalist in the Nature Center to make a craft you can take home. (30 minutes.)
3 p.m. Spring into Spring Hike:
An easy one-mile hike on the Piney Ridge Trail will encourage participants to look for signs of spring’s arrival along the way. Meet on the front porch of the Lodge. (45 minutes)
Redbud Weekend activities at Cacapon State Park April 19-21
Redbud Weekend is presented by Travel Berkeley Springs and incorporates a variety of activities through the area April 19-21. The weekend recognizes one of the Mountain State’s spring blooming trees, Easter Redbud (Cercis Canadensis). Redbud Weekend activities at Cacapon State Park include:
Annual Volunteer Trail Clean-up Day on April 20 beginning at 8 a.m.
Join park staff and the Cacapon State Park Foundation to help clean up the trails. Volunteers are needed to help re-blaze the trail, trim back limbs and briars, and move other obstructions such as downed trees and branches along the trail. Meet at the Nature Center to help prepare the trails for the summer season. Wear sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing.
Meet the Animals starts at 2 p.m.
The Cacapon Nature Center invites you to see the newest exhibits. Using live and mounted animals, skulls, skeletons, and more, this program explores some of West Virginia’s critters. (30 minutes)
A Walk through the Redbuds on Sunday April 21 begins at 1 p.m.
Join Naturalist Renee Fincham for an easy one-mile hike on the Piney Ridge Trail to visit the Redbud trees and more. Meet at the flagpole in front of the Lodge. (45 minutes)
Earth Day and Arbor Day Events Saturday, April 27 at Cacapon
10 a.m. Earth Day 5K and 1-mile fun Walk:
What kind of footprint will you leave on Earth? The Eastern Panhandle Conservation District is co-hosting this event with a goal of encouraging healthy lifestyles as well as a healthy environment. Registration starts at 8:45 a.m. at the Nature Center Picnic Shelter. A minimal fee is required.
11 a.m. Earth Day and Arbor Day Activities:
Explore and get connected to nature! Earth and Arbor Day activities are free and open to all ages. Meet at the Nature Center Shelter to participate. All activities are family oriented and aim to foster environmental awareness.
6 p.m. Cacapon State Park Foundation Gala:
The Cacapon Foundation Spring Gala is April 27 and promises an evening of fun. Enjoy dinner, music, prizes, and a live auction. All Gala proceeds support the Cacapon State Park Foundation.
