A West Virginia Grown Christmas Tree is up for grabs to the producer of the best two-minute video of what agriculture means to you. This is part of the upcoming West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) Centennial which will be celebrated throughout 2011. The West Virginia Legislature created the WVDA February 11, 1911.
The video contest is open to West Virginia students 18 and younger. Videos should be approximately two minutes in length. Deadline for these submissions is December 15, 2010. The video should be submitted on CD, DVD or flash drive and should be mailed to WVDA Communications Division, 1900 Kanawha Blvd, East, Charleston, WV 25305, Attn: Agriculture Tree Contest.
“The coming year will be a very special one for the West Virginia Department of Agriculture and we want all of West Virginia to help us celebrate,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass. “We are asking West Virginians to contribute to this celebration by sharing their stories so we all have a better understanding and appreciation of the agricultural history of this state.”
WVDA is also asking the public to help document West Virginia agriculture over the past century as part of the agency’s centennial and is seeking two categories of submissions from the public.
The first is old West Virginia farm photos and/or stories related to farming in the Mountain State. These materials will be accepted throughout the coming year. They will be added to the WVDA archive and may be used in future publications and on the Department’s website (www.wvagriculture.org). Submissions will not be returned, so only duplicates should be sent. They should be mailed to WVDA Communications Division, 1900 Kanawha Blvd, East, Charleston, WV 25305, Attn: Centennial Photos.
For the second category, West Virginia artists are encouraged to submit original artwork that reflects the WVDA Centennial theme, “100 Years of Agriculture: Protecting Your Family’s Health and Resources.” The winning entry will be the basis of a commemorative poster that will be featured at the 2011 State Fair of West Virginia. Entries must be suitable for reproduction as a poster and must include the artist’s name, address, phone number and email address if applicable.
“We want to see creativity and will accept any type of entry and artist interpretation as long as it is two dimensional so it can be turned into a poster if selected,” said Communications Manager Beth Southern, organizer of the contest. “We see the theme as the conceptual launching point.”
Quality photos of finished works should be e-mailed to bsouthern@wvda.us, or mailed to Communications Division, Attn: Centennial Art Contest. Photos of artwork will not be returned.
WVDA reserves the right to use any submitted artwork for any informational, educational or promotional purposes. Questions should be directed to Beth Southern or Jessica Elliott at 304-558-3708.
