CHARLESTON, W.Va.-Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today announced Charles O. Lorensen as Secretary of the Department of Revenue. The appointment is effective Monday, January 24, 2011.

As a former Tax Commissioner and Cabinet Secretary of the Department of Tax and Revenue (now, the Department of Revenue), I am so pleased to welcome an experienced and extremely knowledgeable individual back to state government.”
Currently, Mr. Lorensen handles commercial and business tax affairs with George & Lorensen P.L.L.C. of Charleston where he has been in practice since 1993. In addition, his extensive career includes being a staff attorney with the West Virginia State Senate with a focus on the Finance and the Ways and Means Committees. Mr. Lorensen has also served as an adjunct lecturer of law at West Virginia University, College of Law instructing courses on corporate tax, estate tax and gift tax.
Lorensen has authored numerous materials for continuing legal education focusing on federal, state and local tax matters; served as correspondent to State Tax Notes, a publication of tax analysis; participated in the American Bar Association State Tax Highlights Publication Project and was primary draftsman of numerous state statutes and municipal ordinances.
A 1986 graduate of West Virginia University, College of Law, he was also managing editor of the West Virginia Law Review. He also holds an LL.M. in taxation from New York University School of Law (2001).
Lorensen is a native of Morgantown, W Va. He is married to Pamela Montgomery Lorensen. They have two children, Kristen and William.
