Commissioner Douglass Comments on Passing of Governor Hulett Smith
1/18/2012
“I would like to extend condolences to the family of Hulett Smith and to his children. Governor Smith was a friend of agriculture. During his term as Governor, he recognized the value and expertise of the Board of Public Works. I am the only current member to have had the pleasure of serving alongside him on the Board. We also campaigned together, and were both elected in 1964.
We traveled a lot of miles together and had many enjoyable experiences, although at times, we did have cause for concern. I recall Hulett liked for the members of the Board to travel around the state with him in his private airplane. On one trip, the governor was serving as co-pilot, and the plane was so overloaded that we barely cleared a fence in getting off the ground at Grant County Airport. I started traveling alone by car after that!
I have many memories of Governor Smith which I will always treasure. He was a champion for the citizens of the great State of West Virginia.”
