Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass is reminding West Virginia peach and apple growers to sign up for crop insurance on next year’s crop. The final date for West Virginia apple and peach growers to obtain crop insurance on next year’s crop is November 20, 2010. Current policyholders also have until November 20 to make any changes to their existing contracts.
“Crop insurance can help fruit producers to better manage their exposure to financial risk and provide a safeguard against weather disasters or other unforeseen incidents,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass.
Price elections for 2011 will be $10.10 per bushel for fresh apples and $12.25 per bushel for fresh peaches. Crop insurance provides coverage against production losses due to natural perils and adverse weather conditions such as hail, wind, frost and drought.
The actual amount of coverage will be determined from actual yields and the protection level selected. Growers are encouraged to contact a local crop insurance agent as soon as possible for more detailed information and premium quotes. For a list of crop insurance agents, contact the local USDA Farm Service Agency office or visit www3.rma.usda.gov/tools/agents.
