Governor Tomblin Issues Statement Supporting W.Va. Leaders Headed to D.C.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today issued the following statement regarding an upcoming visit to Washington, D.C. by members of West Virginia's Congressional Delegation; state legislative leaders; along with business, industry and labor representatives to express concerns about the Obama administration's proposal for new EPA carbon regulations.

"This new directive to the EPA is another attempt by the Obama administration to end the use of coal as we know it. Not only will this proposed regulation devastate West Virginia and the region by eliminating jobs for our citizens, it would unnecessarily increase the cost of power across the nation. West Virginians will not stand for it. This latest announcement is yet another example of the inappropriate use of regulatory authority to set policy for our country. These decisions reside within Congress, not a bureaucracy.

"I believe new economic opportunities are achievable if the federal government partners with us instead of hampering West Virginia's ability to compete globally. While the Obama administration plans to restrict coal-fired power plants in the U.S., large growing economies in places like China and India build more and more coal-fired power plants each year. West Virginia's world-class workforce deserves better.

"I will always stand up for our coal industry--defending and protecting our great state against the Obama administration's overreaching, ideologically driven policies that threaten coal. We should be working, together as a nation, toward energy independence and creating jobs--not harming them."
