CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today kicked off this year's Day to Serve by recognizing the nearly 500 projects taking place across the state-including the BackPack Program, a collective effort by state employees to provide children with nutritious and easy to prepare food at times when other resources are not available such as weekends and during school vacations. The governor was joined by members of the West Virginia National Guard; representatives from Volunteer West Virginia; AmeriCorps members; and representatives from the St. Albans Quarterback Club, participants in the annual Adopt-A-Highway statewide clean-up.

"I'd like to thank every West Virginian who has in some way contributed to this year's Day to Serve. Whether you are helping provide nutritious and easy to prepare food through the BackPack Program, organizing a highway clean-up project or volunteering in your community, I am truly grateful for your volunteer service," Gov. Tomblin said." I hope your experience throughout this week and next ignites a life-long desire to give back to neighbors and friends."

Items can be dropped off at the Guard Shack located at the intersection of Greenbrier and Washington Streets (Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.) or in the Governor's Reception Room (Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.) through September 27, 2013.
