Governor Tomblin Receives Commission on Military Spousal Licensure's Recommendations

12/17/2013

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin joined First Lady Joanne Jaeger Tomblin to receive recommendations from his Commission on Military Spousal Licensure outlining opportunities to better assist military families in navigating the professional licensure and certification requirements upon being assigned to West Virginia.

"One of the challenges facing military families is the frequency with which service members are required to relocate across state lines," Gov. Tomblin said. "Although the State of West Virginia maintains licensing and certification requirements to ensure the safety of our citizens, we must make it our duty to help ensure our military spouses are supported in every way possible. I'd like to thank the members of the Commission for their time and hard work throughout the past several months as well as their commitment to finding new ways to support our military spouses. I look forward to reviewing their recommendation.

The Commission's main recommendations is to provide for temporary licensure options for military spouses, with possible fee waivers for applications, so military spouses can begin working in West Virginia within a month of applying for a license, while going through the normal process to obtain a permanent state license.

"It has been an honor to co-chair the Governor's Commission on Military Spousal Licensure with Amy Hoyer," First Lady Tomblin said. "We have enjoyed working with our fellow committee members to find solutions to license portability issues in the Mountain State. During our meetings and frequent correspondence, we have studied this issue, met with various licensing boards from across the state and discussed and debated best practices for West Virginia. It is our hope that the provisions and procedures included in the committee's recommendations will help the Governor and other state leaders to better serve those who have given so much for us."

Gov. Tomblin established the Governor's Commission on Military Spousal Licensure through Executive Order 4-13 to analyze, review and identify new and innovative ways to better assist military spouses whose professions require state licensure or certification.
