Governor Tomblin visits the Macy's Fulfillment Center in Martinsburg

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today visited the Macy's fulfillment center in Martinsburg. The visit included a private briefing with national executives and a facility tour where the governor met hundreds of workers. The Berkeley County center has sharply exceeded expectations since opening in July 2012. The company anticipates hiring about 2,100 seasonal workers this holiday season-triple the number initially projected. When added to the center's core workforce of about 1,100, the Martinsburg facility will employ more than 3,000 this holiday season.
"Macy's West Virginia fulfillment center is booming," said Gov. Tomblin. "It's wonderful to see firsthand the success this great American company is having here in the Eastern Panhandle. This season, millions of people all over the eastern United States will open gifts that come from right here in Martinsburg. The Macy's executives I met with today are thrilled with the workforce and business climate they've found here in West Virginia: this center has far exceeded their expectations."
"I had the chance to tour the facility today and meet with hundreds of the employees responsible for its top-notch performance," Gov. Tomblin continued. "I can tell you these are exactly the kind of hardworking folks that make West Virginia a winning choice for leading companies from around the globe - something more and more employers are discovering."
"Our employment at the Martinsburg fulfillment center is the result of the rapid growth of Macy's omnichannel business, including online orders from customers. This facility has come on stream very swiftly and successfully. We are proud of our associates in Martinsburg, and the quality of their work. They are doing a great job serving Macy's customers," said Peter Longo, president of Macy's Logistics.
The 1.3 million-square-foot facility, located near Interstate 81 in Martinsburg, is the company's largest Internet fulfillment center. It fulfills orders placed on Macys.com and from Macy's stores. Macy's chose Martinsburg from more than 150 locations that competed for the center.
As large as 46 football fields, the center contains 14 miles of conveyor belts and ships up to 250,000 packages on peak days. It currently employs about 1,100 full-time and permanent part-time employees, but will hire an additional 2,100 employees for the holiday season.
