Governor Announces Improvements In Highways' Paving Cycle
12/7/2011
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today announced that the West Virginia Division of Highways' pavement preservation program and Secondary Road Renovation Program have reduced the average number of years it would take to resurface the State's 23,475 miles of paved roads from 34 years in 2009 to 18.6 for the current year, 2011.
The Division of Highways will resurface over 1300 miles of roads this year at a cost of more than $160 million. The Secondary Road Renovation Program consisted of $15 million specifically targeted at roads with average daily traffic counts of less than 500 vehicles that would not otherwise have funding available to be considered for resurfacing.
"For many West Virginians, secondary routes provide the only transportation access they have to travel to school or church, to obtain medical care, buy groceries or visit neighbors," said Governor Tomblin. "I have put a great emphasis on preserving and maintaining West Virginia's secondary roads by discussing with Secretary of Transportation Paul Mattox the need to fund a program to pave and maintain this vital lifeline for many travelers in the Mountain State."
