CHARLESTON, W.Va. -Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration and the West Virginia Division of Highways, today announced $971,000 in federal funds awarded to eight projects as part of the 2011 Safe Routes to School Grant Program.
The West Virginia Safe Routes to School grant program is part of a national program funded by the Federal Highway Administration to substantially improve the safety of children as they walk or bicycle to school. Projects include sidewalks in the area of the schools or bicycle racks for the students to store their bicycles during the school day.
Funds were awarded to the following:

Pedaling Patriots Phase II, $114,000
Cabell County
Southside Safety Initiative, $130,000
Greenbrier County
FY2011 Alderson Elementary SRTS, $110,000
Hampshire County
Romney Safe Routes to School - Phase 2, $130,000
Harrison County
SRTS Comprehensive model - Phase 4, $130,000
Pocahontas County
Hillsboro Elementary Sidewalks & Healthy Hearts, $115,000
Preston County
Terra Alta on the Move, $130,000
Wood County
Fairplains Elementary School Project, $112,000
