Governor Issues Statement on Passing of Frank Buckles

The country’s last know WWI Veteran died February 27, 2011
CHARLESTON, W.Va.-Governor Earl Ray Tomblin issued the following statement after learning 110 year old Frank Woodruff Buckles of Charles Town, West Virginia, died on February 27, 2011.
“Frank was a true patriot. As a young man, he lied about his age in order to enter the service and fight for his country during World War I”, Gov. Tomblin said. “While the WWI veteran could have lived his later years quietly in Charles Town, he decided to fight one more time. He fought for the 4.7 million Americans who stood shoulder to shoulder with him on the battlefield as he urged Congress to establish a WWI memorial. That’s the kind of man Frank Buckles was. He believed in America, in honoring those who have gone before, and in ensuring the next generation remembers the sacrifices others made for the life in which we live. Frank was a proud West Virginian. We will always be proud of Frank Woodruff Buckles. He is a true Mountaineer and a true American.”
