CHARLESTON, W.Va. -Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today issued a statement following the funeral of West Virginia's Poet Laureate, Dr. Irene Durrett McKinney, 72, of Belington, W.Va.
"As an exceptional poet, accomplished and nationally recognized writer, and professor, at several institutions of higher learning including West Virginia Wesleyan College, Dr. Irene Durrett McKinney has left a lasting impression upon all those who knew her and those who read her work," Gov. Tomblin said. "As the state's poet laureate for the past eighteen years, she advocated for the next generation of West Virginia writers. Through her vast works, we were given a glimpse into Irene's deepest thoughts and will forever cherish her poetry. Joanne and I send our deepest condolences to Dr. McKinney's family, friends and colleagues."
Friends and family of Dr. McKinney celebrated her life today in Belington, W.Va.
