CHARLESTON, W.Va. -Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today appointed Karen Bowling as Cabinet Secretary of the Department of Health and Human resources, effective, July 1, 2013.
"I'm pleased Karen has accepted this opportunity to serve the people of our state," Gov. Tomblin said. "Karen's commitment to the health and wellbeing of her community has been evident throughout her career and her community involvement-including her volunteer work as a Family Nurse Practitioner for the W.Va. Health Right Clinic."
Bowling has served in a number of capacities throughout her career, ranging from healthcare administrator to nurse practitioner. She has also served in leadership roles with the W.Va. Hospital Association and other community organizations.
Bowling was born and raised in Wyoming County. She was the first in her family to graduate from college-receiving her Associate Degree in Nursing from Bluefield State College in 1977, Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Virginia University in 1983, and a Master of Science in Primary Healthcare / Nursing from West Virginia University in 1990. Bowling is currently working toward her PhD in Education from Capella University.
Bowling currently resides in Beckley, W.Va.
