 Governor Tomblin Appoints Michael Douglas Lorensen Judge for the 23rd Judicial Circuit

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today announced the appointment of Martinsburg attorney, Michael Douglas Lorensen, as Circuit Judge for the 23rd Judicial Circuit serving Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties. Lorensen will fill the vacancy created earlier this year when Judge Gina Groh was appointed United States District Judge for the Northern District of West Virginia.

"Judge Groh's exceptional professionalism is well respected, and I believe Michael will continue her legacy at the 23rd Judicial Circuit," Gov. Tomblin said. "Michael's extensive legal and professional background as well as community service will serve the people of Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties well in his new role as judge."

Lorensen, a partner at Bowles Rice in Martinsburg, began his professional career in the field of journalism at the Dominion Post newspaper in Morgantown before returning to West Virginia University and earning his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. Lorensen's legal experience includes serving as Law Clerk to the Honorable Charles Haden II, then Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia. To date, Lorensen serves on the West Virginia Judicial Hearing Board where he hears contested cases of judicial misconduct and submits recommendations to the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. His past community service includes serving as past president and a board member at the Shenandoah Community Health Center. Lorensen is admitted to practice in West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland.

Lorensen resides in Martinsburg, W.Va. with his wife, Maria, and their children, William and Lauree.
