CHARLESTON, W.Va – Governor Earl Ray Tomblin today announced the establishment of the ON TRAC Community Awards. This marks the first state awards recognizing ON TRAC (Organization, Training, Revitalization and Capacity) communities since West Virginia Main Street created the program in 2008. The West Virginia ON TRAC program assists communities in their efforts to boost economic and community growth.
“The ON TRAC communities work diligently to establish volunteer efforts dedicated to the economic and physical improvement of their communities,” Governor Tomblin said. “With technical assistance from the West Virginia Development Office, the 16 ON TRAC communities are pushing through organizational and financial issues to continue the economic revitalization efforts of their historic commercial districts. The ON TRAC Community Awards will recognize and provide financial support for these efforts.”
The 16 West Virginia ON TRAC Communities include Belington, Beverly, Charles Town, Elkins, Madison, Matewan, Mount Hope, Oak Hill, Parkersburg, Parsons, Romney, Rowlesburg, Shinnston, Sistersville, Sutton and Wheeling.
The ON TRAC program provides technical services, design assistance, and continuous training of volunteers using the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Main Street Four Point Approach®. The Four Point Approach includes comprehensive work in organization, promotion, design and economic restructuring. ON TRAC was created by Main Street West Virginia to help communities boost economic growth with evaluation, education and networking resources. ON TRAC is the precursor to becoming a fully designated Main Street Community; participants must be an ON TRAC Community for at least two years before applying to become a Main Street Community.
