Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin issued the following statement concerning the potential partial federal government shutdown.
“In West Virginia, we take the responsible approach. Just like a family planning its future, we balance our budgets, we pay down our debt, and we live within our means,” Gov. Tomblin said. “I sincerely hope that our national leaders in Washington can follow West Virginia’s lead and find a common sense solution that avoids shutting down the federal government. While we are hoping for the best, West Virginia is preparing for the worst.
“The situation in Washington remains fluid. My administration is actively engaged with federal agencies to determine how the shutdown will affect state government. When the dust settles and we have a clear picture as to how the federal government will handle the partial shutdown, we will respond appropriately. I am confident that a short-term shutdown of the federal government will not have a material impact on the operation of State government. Moreover, the State will be prepared to address any issues that arise if the stalemate continues and the federal government is shutdown for an extended period of time.
“Although not specifically relating to the operation of state government, we have been informed that, if there is a partial shutdown, approximately 224 members of our national guard, because of their specific duty status, may lose insurance coverage immediately for themselves and their families.
“To avoid this shutdown and make sure that these drastic actions do not take place, I know that my fellow Democratic colleagues in Congress have agreed to steep spending cuts, yet a deal remains elusive. It is hard to believe that there are those in Washington who would allow these unfathomable consequences to occur simply for political gain.”
