CHARLESTON, W.Va – Governor Earl Ray Tomblin is issuing a proclamation ordering all United States and State flags displayed at state facilities throughout West Virginia be lowered to half-staff in honor of Deputy United States Marshal Derek Hotsinpiller, 24, of Bridgeport who was killed in the line of duty on Wednesday, February 16, 2011.
“We have tragically lost a young man who was dedicated to protecting the public,” said Gov. Tomblin. “Deputy Marshal Hotsinpiller knew his profession was a dangerous one and yet, he put others before himself each and every day as a dedicated law enforcement officer. West Virginia will be forever indebted to him. My heart goes out to the Hotsinpiller family as they have suffered a tragic loss and I ask all West Virginians to pray for them.”
Deputy U.S. Marshal Hotsinpiller was among several U.S. Marshals, West Virginia State Police and The Mountain State Fugitive Taskforce who attempted to serve an arrest warrant on an Elkins man when the suspect fired on the officers. Two other Marshals were injured.
Deputy U.S. Marshal Hotsinpiller graduated from the U.S. Marshals Academy in 2010 and worked for slightly more than a year with the U.S. Marshal Service out of the Clarksburg office.
Deputy Marshal Hotsinpiller was a graduate of Bridgeport High School and Fairmont State College. He is survived by his mother, Pam Hotsinpiller, and brother, Dustin, a Bridgeport Police Officer.
