Charleston, W.Va. –Gov. Joe Manchin awarded a $13,296 grant today to the Division of Forestry to install kiosks and improve signage at trailheads within Coopers Rock State Forest. The grant was provided to the agency through the Department of Transportation Recreational Trail Program.
“Its rich history and unique natural features make Coopers Rock State Forest one of the most heavily visited forests in West Virginia,” Manchin said. “This project will better educate visitors and improve their recreational experiences throughout the forest.”
The trailhead project was part of the recreation plan for the forest that was completed in 2007. Two main goals of the recreation plan are to develop standardized trailhead information for each official trail in the forest and to improve interpretative and informative signage around the entire forest.
Coopers Rock State Forest is the largest in the West Virginia State Forest system encompassing approximately 12,747 acres. The forest is located 13 miles east of Morgantown and eight miles west of Bruceton Mills. The Division of Natural Resources holds the title to the forest, and sections within the DNR and the Division of Forestry manage the forest for multiple uses, including recreation, wildlife and forest management.
