Outdoor Channel, Shentel Cable and the W.Va. Division of Natural Resources Team to Keep the Great Outdoors Great

9/24/2010

ROANOKE, W.Va. – Outdoor Channel, America’s Leader in Outdoor TV, today announced its latest volunteer effort as part of its unprecedented Outdoor Channel Corps initiative to mobilize outdoor enthusiasts to restore and improve public lands and outdoor spaces. Teaming up with Shentel Cable (Shenandoah Telecommunications) and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR), Outdoor Channel Corps will head out on a Conservation Tour of Duty at Stonewall Resort State Park in Roanoke, W.Va., to clean public lands.

As part of West Virginia’s Celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Days (NH&FD) Sept.25 – 26, the WVDNR, with the help of the West Virginia Wildlife Federation, will host outdoor games and activities at the Stonewall Resort State Park. Outdoor Channel Corps and Shentel Cable will launch Conservation Tour of Duty: Roanoke to promote hunting, fishing and conservation education on Sept.25th during the two-day event.

“Outdoor Channel encourages West Virginia residents to join us and Shentel Cable, along with the WVDNR, as we make this outdoor space more beautiful through our Conservation Tour of Duty: National Hunting and Fishing Days,” said Denise Conroy-Galley, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Research. “The local effort will not only benefit the Stonewall Resort State Park, but it also sends a message about the importance of preserving access to our shared outdoor heritage. It’s a win-win for our volunteers and partners that speaks to the important balance of outdoor recreation and conservation-related responsibility.”

“Our partnership with Outdoor Channel helps to promote this event to an audience that is already passionate about the hunting, fishing, environment and conservation,” said Doris Kidd, Shentel Cable. “We hope this partnership will inspire our subscribers to seek additional ways to help preserve the environment.”

“National Hunting and Fishing Days is a chance for everyone to take part in outdoor activities and appreciate nature,” said Jerry Westfall, coordinator of the NH&FD event for the WVDNR. “Outdoor Channel Corps and Shentel Cable’s support for the National Hunting and Fishing Days have inspired us to focus on raising a greater awareness for the environment through our celebration of the great outdoors.”

Outdoor Channel Corps aims to recruit one million volunteers by 2015, making it one of the largest volunteer programs of its kind. Carrying the tagline “Serve and Conserve,” Outdoor Channel Corps encourages outdoor enthusiasts to volunteer in their communities to ensure that the outdoor lifestyle continues to thrive. For its Conservation Tour of Duty, Outdoor Channel is working closely with state and federal agencies, its distribution affiliates and leading conservation partners to recruit volunteers for local restoration and improvement events on public lands and outdoor spaces across the country.

Outdoor Channel is the only Nielsen-rated network to cover the outdoors on a full-time basis. As such, the company is leading the charge on conservation and preservation of the outdoors. Through its unique strategic partnerships with organizations like Pheasants Forever, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Safari Club International, the network promotes conservation in all of its content and across all of its platforms.
