Hawks Nest State Park Lights Up for Christmas

11/23/2010

ANSTED, W.Va. – Christmas lights and decorations are going up for the annual decorating of the lodge and lawn area at Hawks Nest State Park, located in Ansted. The decorations recently were installed by the Hawks Nest Foundation with assistance of park staff. They will be available for public viewing from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day.

“Hawks Nest State Park is known for its breathtaking view of the New River and gorge area, and the skyline any time of year is awesome,” said Megan Flinn, park naturalist and activities coordinator. “For visitors to this Fayette County destination, Christmas lights and decorations are another treat to enjoy in the evening.”

The Christmas lights are put up throughout the main Hawks Nest Lodge area of the park (visible from Route 60 all the way up to the front door of the lodge) and feature traditional Christmas images (candles, Santa, sleighs, elves, etc). Christmas trees are decorated after the Thanksgiving holidays.

Hawks Nest State Park is open year-round and features a 31-room lodge, restaurant, meeting area, picnicking, and aerial tram. One of West Virginia’s most photographed views is from the observation area at the lower park. The lower park was one of the original Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) state park areas serving as a travel destination since the mid 1930s. Hawks Nest is known for Dinner Theatres during the wintry months.
