Charleston, W.Va. - The time of year for carnivals, fairs and family-fun celebrations is upon us. In an effort to keep patrons safe while they are having a good time, the West Virginia Division of Labor is performing safety checks on amusement rides and attractions throughout the state.
“Our inspectors check all details of the rides and make sure they are as safe as possible for the public,” said Division of Labor Commissioner David Mullins. “Safety is always our number one concern in our role as a consumer protection and service agency.”
In addition to carnival-type rides, other amusement devices required by law to be inspected include mechanical rides, kiddie rides, inflatable attractions, climbing walls, waterslides and devices furnished by rental companies.
The DOL encourages event sponsors and hosts to confirm proof of current registration, inspection and insurance with amusement ride operators to ensure the safety of their patrons and to avoid disruption of the event.
Amusement companies can be issued cease and desist orders if they don’t comply with regulations. The division regulates the amusement park and ride/attraction industry in West Virginia to make sure the rides are safe and in compliance with state laws. Each amusement ride and attraction should have a sticker on it indicating it has been inspected. Any amusement ride or attraction operator without a permit from the West Virginia Division of Labor is guilty of a misdemeanor.
If you suspect someone is operating rides or attractions illegally or without the required state permit, or if you believe a ride is unsafe, please report it immediately to DOL at 304-558-7890. Additional information also can be obtained at http://wvlabor.org.
