The West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) is inviting West Virginia’s Kindergarten through sixth-grade students to participate in its annual National Farm-City Week poster contest. The theme of the contest this year, to coincide with the recognition of the WVDA’s Centennial in 2011, is “100 Years of Agriculture – Protecting Your Family’s Health and Resources”
“Agriculture has had tremendous advancements in the past century,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass. “But what has essentially stayed the same is WVDA’s mission to protect human and animal health and to promote products of the state. It is so important to teach students where their food comes from and how fortunate we are to have a safe food supply.”
Kindergarten through second grade students have the option to color a predetermined poster and older students (third through sixth grade) should enter an original poster of their own creation (both poster versions are available for download at
www.wvagriculture.org, click on the Farm-City link). Posters will be accepted if reduced to 8½x11 (letter size) or 8½x14 (legal size). Entries will be judged on originality, artistic quality and incorporation of agricultural themes. The schools have also been mailed the poster examples for participation.
First-place winners in each age category will be awarded $75, second-place winners will receive $50, and third-place winners will receive $25. Grade categories will be K-2, 3-4 and 5-6.
National Farm-City Week takes place each year during the week immediately preceding Thanksgiving Day and recognizes the contributions made by both rural and urban America in providing consumers a safe, wholesome and affordable food supply. More information is available at
www.farmcity.org.
Poster entries must be postmarked by November 18 and returned to: WVDA, Communications Division, 1900 Kanawha Boulevard, East, Charleston, WV 25305.
