 Labor Day Weekend at Canaan Valley offers array of activities

DAVIS, W.Va. – Labor Day Weekend starts off with a bang at a Sporting Clay Shoot-out Competition at Canaan Valley State Park Saturday, August 31. “It’s a first time event at the park’s new sporting clay shooting range,” said Lenore Testerman, park activities coordinator.

Registration takes place at 8 a.m., with first flight qualifying rounds beginning at 8:30 a.m. Second flight is scheduled at 1 p.m. A cook-out lunch is available from 11:30 – 2 p.m. The Shootout begins at 2 p.m. with Round 1, Round 2, and Round 3 qualifiers. An award ceremony at 4 p.m. concludes the event.

An entry fee of $40 includes: registration, prizes, and clays only. Gun rental (if required) is $25 per day and ammunition may be purchased on site. Participants must be 18 or older to participate. There is a 60 person limit to the competition. A detailed schedule and prize information are available on the park website www.canaanresort.com. Pre-registration is required.   • Board Games set up in the Pine Room from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • A guided hike on Abe Run meets at the nature center at 10 a.m. for about an hour of easy walking and being outdoors.
  • Crafts at the nature center are offered from noon until 2 p.m.

Saturday, August 31, 2013
Activities include a guided hike from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Board games, sand art and candy art crafts, and relay games are planned throughout the day for family fun. Also available: a watermelon eating contest at 12:30 p.m., wagon rides at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. and an 8 p.m. bonfire with a marshmallow roast.

Sunday activities include crafts, guided hikes at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., a cornhole tournament, bingo, kite making, wagon rides and evening bonfire. Activities are generally held at the park’s nature center.

The renovation of the lodge complex at Canaan Valley State Park continues with remarkable changes in appearance and functionality as the construction progresses. The original lodge rooms remain open for reservations. The restaurant, cabins, and park amenities continue to enjoy good visitation this summer.
