Macy’s breaks ground for new fulfillment center in Berkeley County

4/15/2011

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Construction officially got underway today on the new 1.3-million-square-foot Macy’s, Inc. online fulfillment center in Martinsburg. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin joined Peter Longo, president of Macy’s Logistics and Operations, and other dignitaries in celebrating the groundbreaking.

When fully operational, the $150 million fulfillment center will create 1,200 full-and part-time year-round jobs and 700 temporary seasonal jobs in Berkeley County. The center will support Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s growing online sales, preparing and shipping orders primarily to customers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

“West Virginia proudly welcomes Macy’s Inc. to our state,” Gov. Tomblin said. “All of us take great pride in knowing that West Virginia stood shoulder-to-shoulder with other locations across the country and succeeded in being the state that Macy’s selected. Our workforce stands ready to make this one of the company’s premiere distribution and fulfillment center operations. We look forward to a long and rewarding partnership with Macy’s.”

“We at Macy’s thank state and local officials in West Virginia, led by Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, for their support and assistance to bring this facility to reality,” Longo said. “Macy’s is investing more than $150 million in building this world-class fulfillment center. We look forward to being an active member of the community in Martinsburg and Berkeley County, as we are across the country in places where we operate.”

Building the facility is expected to generate as many as 3,000 construction-related jobs. The brisk construction schedule calls for the center to begin shipping to customers in summer 2012. The center will be situated on 92 acres in the Cumbo Yard Business and Industrial Park.

Site selection included many factors such as a quality work force known for high productivity and low turnover, low cost of doing business, business climate and strategic location.

Later this year when construction has progressed, Macy’s will post jobs on its website www.macysjobs.com.

Considered one of the nation’s premiere retailers, Macy’s operates the macys.com and Bloomingdales.com websites and about 850 department stores in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico under the names of Macy's and Bloomingdale's.

Currently, Macy’s online orders are handled through fulfillment centers in Tennessee and Arizona. Bloomingdale’s online orders are handled primarily through a center in Connecticut.
