SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Seventeen West Virginia state parks and forests have recognized 91 participants during National Trails Day®, June 4, with Cacapon and Pipestem resort state parks leading the way. Ten-mile hikes were scheduled at both parks. Thirteen individuals arrived for the Bluestone Turnpike hike at Pipestem. Cacapon recognized 14 hardy hikers who joined Cacapon’s naturalist, Kelly Smith, for the “Hike Across the State” event.
West Virginia state parks and state forests challenged individuals to take a hike or walk on National Trails Day® as part of the American Hiking Society’s annual event. The American Hiking Society organizes and promotes hiking as a healthful outdoor activity and a way to celebrate the many benefits that trails provide the public when used. Participants could attend a scheduled hike or hike independently on trails with in the state park system as part of the event.
Log cards were available online and at park offices to record mileage hiked or biked. Certificate and patches were mailed in mid-July to the 91 participants who submitted completed log cards. There was no charge to participate in a National Trails Day. Hiking on trails at state-operated parks and forests are open daily to the public at no charge.
