CAIRO, W.Va. – Educators are invited to attend a training workshop for the portable planetarium “STARLAB” and NASA’s “Space Place” activities for the classroom, scheduled Dec. 10, 2011, from 2 – 5 p.m.
“We are excited to bring this training to Ritchie County,” said park naturalist Ken Zebo, who organized the event. “The three-hour workshop is open to teachers or individuals such as naturalists who provide interpretative activities to the public. The workshop is free to attend, but space is limited and reservations are required.”
The workshop will be held at the Harrisville Elementary School Gymnasium in Harrisville. The instructor is Pamela McClung Casto, Education Specialist, NASA IV and V Educator Resource Center. The focus is about constellations, the moon, weather, plate tectonics, and much more. Individuals completing the workshop can use NASA materials at no cost, including the STARLAB planetarium. The workshop trains educators about the subject matter and the resources available to conduct future “Space Place” activities and events in classrooms or other educational settings. Use of NASA equipment and guidelines is part of the workshop information. Zebo can be contacted at 304-643-2931 or

North Bend State Park lodge is offering a room rate of $50 plus taxes for Dec. 9 and Dec. 10 for educators registering and attending the “Space Place” workshop. North Bend State Park is less than 10 miles drive from Harrisville Elementary School. The workshop requires a 12-foot ceiling height to accommodate the planetarium, part of the workshop equipment and “how-to-use” presentation.
“North Bend appreciates the Ritchie County Board of Education for allowing use of the gym so the workshop can be presented,” Zebo said.
