ANSTED, W.Va. – Sunday buffet, flower pot painting, room tours, door prizes and music are some of the activities at Hawks Nest State Park Open House scheduled for May 8. “It is Mother’s Day and to celebrate we’re having other activities at the lodge for the family and friends to enjoy,” said Megan Flinn, activities coordinator. The park’s new restaurant concessionaire, Steve Thomas, also will be introduced to visitors and guests.
Hawks Nest Open House activities
Sunday buffet for Mother’s Day is from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the lodge restaurant. The buffet features turkey, ham and all the trimmings at $18.95 per person. Food service at Hawks Nest State Park is operated by Steve Thomas of Gauley Bridge. “Steve has an extensive food service background and is tremendous to work with for special events as well as daily restaurant operations,” said Flinn. Restaurants at West Virginia’s state parks are all open for Mother’s Day.
Activities for children include “paint a flower pot” craft. “It’s something youth can do to create a useful gift for mothers and grandmothers,” said Flinn, who will be the instructor. The activity is held at the park lodge.
A tent sale will be part of the fun. Discounted gift shop items from Hawks Nest, Twin Falls, Blackwater Falls, Babcock, and Pipestem state parks will be available for purchase.
Park staff will lead tours of the lodge and the guest rooms for visitors interested in seeing the type of rooms at Hawks Nest and the services the park provides overnight guests.
Door prize drawings will be conducted with registration available at the lodge front desk. Light refreshments are complimentary. “The first 30 moms who visit the front desk, beginning at 11 a.m., will receive carnations,” said Flinn.
Bluegrass music by Duffy Boyd and Friends will be from 1 – 2 p.m. at the lodge. A corn toss game known as “cornhole” will be available to play all day. Open House activities are free and located inside or next to Hawks Nest Lodge.
