Passport to Fun renews interest in state park golf season passes

5/26/2011

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A “Spend the Night Pass,” a round of “Golf for a Friend,” swimming passes, miniature golf and paddle boat rides, Whittaker Wednesday at Cass Scenic Railroad and more, are part of the 2011 Season Golf Pass “extras” at three West Virginia resort state parks.

“A Passport to Fun book accompanies every season golf pass sold this year at Twin Falls, Pipestem, and Cacapon,” said Paul Redford, lodge parks district administrator with the West Virginia State Park system. “The ‘passports’ are new this year and make a season pass price even more attractive and encourages use of other aspects of other state parks.” Passports to Fun are only available with Season Golf Pass purchases.

Season passes have been sold at state park golf course for decades and provide both avid and casual golfers an affordable “golf fix.”  There are five state parks with 18-hole courses: Twin Falls, Pipestem, Cacapon, Canaan Valley and Stonewall resorts.

“The season golf pass alone has several perks in addition to unlimited golf play on the home course,” explained Brian Wetzel, golf professional at Twin Falls. “Full-season individual golf passes include unlimited golf at the home course and unlimited outdoor pool use for the pass holder at Pipestem, Cacapon, and of course, Twin Falls. Season pass purchases also include two 18-hole rounds of reciprocal golf play at the other 18-hole courses on state parks.” Reciprocal play requires motorized cart rental.

·        My Best Friend Pass.  The bearer of the passport card, when accompanied by a golf season pass holder of either Twin Falls or Pipestem resorts, may enjoy a free 18-hole round at Cacapon, Pipestem or Twin Falls.

·        Five passes to play miniature golf or paddle boat use at Pipestem Resort and may be given to friends, neighbors or co-workers to use.

·        Whittaker Wednesdays at Cass Scenic Railroad. Child rides free when accompanied by a paying adult on Wednesday, June – August, 2011

·        Admission passes to the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History

·        Spend the Night Pass.  A recognized pass holder is extended a complimentary overnight stay, Sunday – Thursday, as available, at Cacapon, Pipestem’s Mountain Creek Lodge or Twin Falls Lodge.

About Season Golf Passes at Twin Falls, Pipestem and Cacapon resort state parks

Season passes are valid from March 1 through until March 1, 2012.  There are three types of golf passes, and an “add-on” pass.

·        A Single pass, also known as “full pass” or “adult pass,” is for an individual and includes unlimited golf and swimming at the home course for the pass holder. An additional person may be added to the single pass.  The additional person is defined as an immediate family member (wife, husband, or child who has not reached his or her 19th birthday and living at home or not reached his or her 23rd birthday and enrolled full-time in college). Two 18-hole rounds of reciprocal play at the other four courses are included in the pass purchase with rental of motorized riding cart.  Unlimited reciprocal play, excluding Stonewall and Canaan Valley courses, may be purchased for an additional fee.

·        A Mid-week pass limits golf play to Sundays after 2 p.m. through Thursdays, excluding holidays.  The mid-week pass does not include reciprocal play at other courses.  Additional persons may be added to the Mid-week season golf pass.

·        A Junior golf pass encourages youth under 19 years of age to hit the greens early in life. The Junior pass allows unlimited play, but restricts golf play until after 2:30 p.m. on weekends and holidays.  Twin Falls offers golf etiquette classes and Junior pass holders must attend a class within 30 days of pass purchase.

Costs for single or adult season golf passes are: Twin Falls ($650), Pipestem ($750) and Cacapon ($775), plus applicable taxes. To add an additional person to a full season pass: Twin Falls ($260), Pipestem ($300) and Cacapon ($400). To have unlimited reciprocal play at Twin Falls, Pipestem and Cacapon is $75 per individual or additional person pass.  Recognized pass holders receive 10 percent off meals at Cacapon Clubhouse, Twin Falls Restaurant, and Mulligan’s at Pipestem as well as discounts in the pro shop at these same three courses.

Short Course Season Pass at Pipestem Resort

Known at the Par-3, the short course at Pipestem is challenging and often preferred to the 18-championship course. “It’s not your standard 9-hole course” says Dave Caplinger, superintendent at Pipestem State Park. “It’s a challenging course with full yardage and large tees and greens.”  With two courses at Pipestem State Park, an 18-hole and a Par 3, there also are two season passes.  The Short Course at Pipestem has a mid-week pass at $350 with an additional person cost of $110.

Golf courses at West Virginia’s state parks feature golf pro shops, snack bars and restaurants, motorized golf carts, and excellent golfing conditions. State parks can also accommodate stay and play golfers with golf packages for lodge and golf play at Pipestem, Twin Falls, Cacapon, Canaan Valley and Stonewall. Tygart Lake and North Bend state parks partner with areas golf course for additional stay and play options.
