Charleston, W.Va. – Is your holiday to-do list already a mile long? Check one more task off early by making plans today to visit a Choose and Cut Christmas Tree Farm.
The West Virginia Division of Forestry and the Department of Commerce have created www.wvcommerce.org/directory/christmastreefarms, a site that includes a searchable database, map, contact information and descriptions of products and services for more than 30 farms throughout West Virginia.
Assistant State Forester Bob Radspinner says that selecting a West Virginia-grown Christmas tree is beneficial in many ways.
“Choose and Cut Christmas Tree Farms offer beautiful trees at reasonable prices, and with more than 30 farms located throughout West Virginia you are sure to find one within driving distance,” Radspinner said. “A daytrip to a Christmas tree farm can be a great family adventure, allowing all members of the family to play their parts in choosing the right tree.”
Radspinner also noted that after the holiday, real trees can be recycled. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection will accept trees from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 8, 2011, at Charleston’s Capitol Market. The trees collected there will be used by the Division of Natural Resources to create fish habitat in lakes throughout the state. Residents in other areas of West Virginia can check with their local solid waste authorities for recycling programs in their areas.
Although most Choose and Cut Christmas Tree Farms are open from the day after Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve, hours and services vary, so Radspinner suggests calling ahead for details. To find a Choose and Cut Christmas tree farm near you, visit www.wvcommerce.org/directory/christmastreefarms.
