Pipestem Resort State Park offers “Brass from the Past” Dec. 4

11/23/2011
PIPESTEM, W.Va. –Steeped in tradition and community spirit, an annual holiday music event is scheduled at Pipestem Resort State Park Dec. 4. The East River Town Community Band will play at 3 p.m. on Dec. 4 at McKeever Lodge. The mostly brass band will strike up favorite Christmas and seasonal music in a concert setting that you might find in the late 1890s through the 1940s. The performance is free and open to the public.

The East River Mountain Town Band was founded in the fall of 1997. The first rehearsal included a small nucleus of 33 members; this year’s band numbers more than 60 musicians. Area high schools and college students comprise about 20 percent of the ensemble, while adults make up the balance of the groups. The musicians of this community concert band range in age from 15 to 85 and its members come from four area counties in the two Virginias – McDowell, Mercer, Raleigh, W.Va., and Tazewell, Va.
