Beckley, W.Va. - The West Virginia Division of Forestry (DOF) will conduct a public tour at Seneca State Forest on Saturday, June 4, 2011. This is an informational tour for the public to learn about plans for a prescribed timber harvest in the northern section of the forest.
State Lands Manager Barbara Breshock says the harvest is necessary to help wildlife and keep the forest healthy. “The prescribed timber harvest will provide more diverse habitat for local wildlife and increase the forest’s growth potential.”
The tour begins at 10 a.m.; participants should arrive at the Seneca State Forest office prior to 10 a.m. Breshock encourages anyone attending to bring substantial footwear, clothing appropriate for the weather, snacks and water.
A one-mile hike on uneven ground in the woods is planned. There are no trails along this route, although some old roads are involved, and there are some hills along the tour path.
If you plan to attend, please notify Breshock no later than noon on Thursday, June 2, so that she can arrange enough transportation for all attendees. She can be reached by phone at 304.932.7105 or via e-mail,
Barbara.A.Breshock@wv.gov.
