After five years with the West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services, Commissioner Sandra “Sandy” Vanin has stepped down as head of the agency. Vanin’s resignation was made official on October 15.
The governor stated that Vanin has been a great asset and a dedicated public servant during her tenure in the Bureau of Senior Services.
“Sandy did an outstanding job as head of Senior Services. The state dedicated a record amount of additional services to our seniors under her watch,” Gov. Joe Manchin. “She has worked tirelessly to provide our state’s seniors with the resources to live as independently as possible.”
In 2005, fewer than 40,000 seniors received at least one service through Bureau programs. At the close of last fiscal year, that number increased to 120,499 seniors who had received at least one service by the agency.
In a letter to the governor, Vanin said, “It’s been a distinct honor to serve as commissioner of the Bureau of Senior Services. During my five years, the Bureau has seen the largest increase of new dollars in its history.”
Vanin noted the accomplishments that have been made during the last five years which include the creation of the Lighthouse and FAIR programs, statewide regional Aging and Disability Resource Centers and placing a new hot/cold truck in each West Virginia county, as some of her most proud achievements.
Vanin stated that serving as commissioner has been the most challenging while at the same time, most rewarding experience of her professional career.
Manchin has appointed Barbara “Bobbie” Reynolds, current deputy commissioner, as acting Senior Services commissioner.
