 Summer winds and woodwinds welcome visitors to Canaan Valley Celebration of the Arts events, July 6-7

DAVIS, W.Va. - Cooler temperatures in the mountain valley and a multitude of activities and entertainment are scheduled at Canaan Valley area of West Virginia. Kite flying at Windfest and The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra performance at Canaan Valley Resort State Park, and fireworks in Thomas are some of the family and friend activities you’ll find July 5-7 in Tucker County, West Virginia.

Windfest 2013 Events July 5 and 6, 2013
Kite building workshops will be conducted by Wings over Washington Kite Club on Saturday, July 6, and Sunday, July 7, 2013. Children and adults are encouraged to build a kite and learn how to fly it afterwards; there is a small charge for the kite craft. Other activities during Windfest include:
  • Guided hikes on Friday, July 5 and Saturday July 6 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Hikes are open to the public. Hikers should meet at the Nature Center. There is no fee to attend hiking programs.
  • Kite Building Workshop with Wings over Washington Kite Club is Saturday July 6 at 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m.
  • Jumbo Kite Flying & Stunt Kite demonstrations teach how to fly stunt kites, including the enormous 80-foot Scuba Diver, 20-foot Lobster, and gigantic Octopus kites. These activities are scheduled July 6 at noon and again at 3 p.m.

Wheeling Symphony Concert and other activities at Canaan Valley State Park July 6 and 7
The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra
will be in concert at 3 p.m. at the Canaan Valley Resort State Park snow tube park amphitheater, Saturday, July 6. The concert is free to attend and open to the public. Attendees should bring a blankets or chairs. The Wheeling Symphony is sponsored by Tucker County Alpine Festival and Canaan Valley Resort State Park. Food and beverages concessions will be available. 

Other activities planned for Saturday, July 6, include wagon rides with marshmallow roast/bonfire at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Register for wagon rides at the Beech Club. There is a per-person fee to participate.

Kite building is offered on Sunday, July 7, at 11 a.m. with Jumbo Kite Flying and Stunt Kit Demonstration at noon. There is no charge to watch kite flying. There is a minimal charge for materials to build a kite. Instructors on site will assist anyone interested.

Fireworks in Thomas, W.Va., July 6
Fireworks in nearby Thomas are at 9 p.m. or dark on Saturday, July 6. Thomas is 12 miles north of Canaan Valley State Park. 

Canaan Valley and nearby Blackwater Falls state parks feature lodge rooms and cabin accommodations. Both state parks feature dining rooms with full menus, indoor swimming areas, fitness facilities and a variety of activities and amenities.
