“The Music Man”: Jan. 25, Smoot Theatre, Parkersburg Windwood Theatricals presents “The Music Man.” Follow fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying musical instruments and uniforms for a boy’s band. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the town librarian, with chaos ensuing as the townsfolk get wind of his scheme. The Belle of Amherst: Jan. 28-29, Tamarack, Beckley Tamarack and Theatre West Virginia Presents “The Belle of Amherst” by William Luce. Pam Chabora from Theatre West Virginia gives a resounding one-woman performance of the acclaimed play about the life of famed writer Emily Dickinson. Told in two acts, this play gives a voice to one of America’s most enigmatic and eccentric poets. West Virginia Symphony Orchestra - A Touch of Tchaikovsky: Jan. 28-29, Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences, Charleston The WVSO’s 2010-2011 Capitol Conference Center’s Symphonic Series continues with “A Touch of Tchaikovsky” – featuring Adam Golka, the Gilmore Young Artist and Max I. Allen Classical Fellowship award-winning pianist. Golka will perform Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concert No. 1 in B-flat minor – one of the composer’s best-loved pieces and arguably his most famous piano work. In addition, this concert also will include two works by one of Maestro Grant Cooper’s favorite contemporary composers: Douglas Lilburn. Cooper, also a former student of the composer, will lead the Orchestra in Lilburn’s Overture: Aotearoa and Symphony No. 2. Both performances will take place at 8 p.m. at the Maier Foundation Performance Hall of the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences. West Virginia International Auto Show: Jan. 28-30, Charleston Civic Center, Charleston The 2011 West Virginia International Auto Show will showcase hundreds of new cars, trucks, crossovers and hybrids at the Charleston Civic Center. Featuring luxury rides, the latest alternative fuel vehicles, specialty displays and giveaways, the show offers a fun-filled day for the whole family. Attendees are invited to sit behind the wheels, inspect engines and explore new automotive technologies – all in a non-selling environment. Representatives from leading automotive manufacturers will be on-site to answer questions and provide information on the latest vehicles. 21st Annual Spa Feast: Jan. 29, Ice House, Berkeley Springs
Berkeley Springs, a centuries-old health resort and the present-day Spa Capital of West Virginia, stages a daylong sampling of dozens of bodywork and health-enhancing treatments from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ice House in Berkeley Springs. The daylong fair showcases an array of health-giving therapies ranging from Shiatsu and LaStone massage to Reiki, reflexology and acupuncture.
