The Asylum: Ward 24: Oct. 18-31, Trans-Allegheny Asylum, Weston

The hospital grounds are as welcoming as one might imagine. Smiling nurses greet visitors at the main entrance, while patients pass by with a polite nod. But beyond this polished scene is a world that is only spoken of in the fears of patients and the threats of staff! The historic structure, which hosts regular walk-through tours, presents a special fright fest for Halloween. Hours are Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from dark till 10 p.m. and Friday-Saturday from dark until midnight. Admission price is $15 per person; sales stop 30 minutes before closing. Get Up! Get Out! Get At It: Oct. 22-24, Twin Falls Resort State Park, Mullens

This weekend is focused on healthy foods, workouts and moves. Halloween Wagon Ride/Group Camp Walk: Oct 22-24 and Oct. 29-30, Tomlinson Run State Park, New Manchester

Tomlinson Run State Park Foundation and the New Manchester Volunteer Fire Department will be sponsoring a Halloween Wagon Ride/Group Camp Walk. Visitors will take a wagon ride or a bus ride to the recreation hall at the group camp. The recreation hall and five cabins are set up for a spooky walk through. From there you go to the dining hall where a fireplace will warm you and you may purchase hot and cold food and drinks. Popcorn, baked goods, raffles and face painting also will be available. The wagon and bus will return you to your vehicle at the end of the evening. Hours are dusk to 9 p.m. and the cost is $3 per person. For more information, contact 304-564-3651.

9th Annual ACE New River Gorge-ous Trail Run and Walk: Oct. 23, ACE Adventure Resort, Oak Hill

This race welcomes runners and walkers alike with several race options. There is a 13.2 mile run, an 8.5 mile run and a 4.5 mile walk. Fall Color Walk: Oct. 24, West Virginia Botanic Garden, 1061 Tyrone Road, Morgantown

The West Virginia Botanic Garden (WVBG), in harmony with nature, seeks to enhance the quality of life through public enjoyment and education involving inspirational landscapes and displays of a rich variety of ornamental plants appropriate to the region. Come enjoy and learn about the bright colored foliage around the reservoir basin and the old growth forest! WVU Arboretum Specialist Jon Weems will explain how fall color appears in leaves and show the great diversity of color in tree and shrub leaves at the West Virginia Botanic Garden. All ages are welcome. Wear hiking footwear, preferably waterproof, and meet at the lower parking lot. The walk takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Harvest Fest and All Hallows Eve: Oct. 29-30, Fort Randolph at Krodel Park, Point Pleasant

The Harvest Fest hours are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and activities will include 18th century seminars and life skills. There also will be an open fire iron chef cook-off in which food is cooked over an open fire at the fort. The gates will close at 4 p.m. and re-open at 6 p.m. for “Tales in the Tavern.” Everyone will gather in the tavern to tell stories and explain why Halloween started and how much it has changed over the centuries. There is no admission cost, but donations will be accepted and are appreciated. Free street parking. Haunted Trail & Not So Spooky Hay Rides: Oct. 29-30, Jackson County Jr. Fairgrounds, Cottageville

Come and join the fun on a Haunted Trail and a Not-So-Spooky Hay Ride at the Jackson County Jr. Fairgrounds. Hours are 8 to 11 p.m. Concessions will be available. October Old-Time Week and Fiddlers’ Reunion: Oct. 29-31, Augusta Heritage Center of Davis and Elkins College, Elkins

Held in conjunction with Old-Time Week, this unique event is a favorite of all who love old-time music. Scores of West Virginia's master fiddlers, pickers, and singers gather, along with hundreds of local folks and visitors for a weekend of fun, packed with jam sessions throughout the weekend, informal concerts, and renewal of friendships. On Friday night, the Fiddlers' Reunion kicks off with a Halloween Square Dance at 8 p.m. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Caller will be Lou Maiuri with music provided by the October Old-Time Week staff. Admission is $8 to the general public and October Old-Time Week students dance free. On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Fiddlers' Reunion events center on a concert stage in the lounge of the Hermanson Center. Enjoy the music of a series of performances by invited old-time master fiddlers and younger old-time musicians from all over West Virginia. A freestyle clogging and flatfooting contest will be held on the stage beginning at 4 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded. Exhibits and sales by instrument and food vendors will be nearby. Throughout the day, tune and song swaps feature traditional singers from all over the region, and jam sessions go on far into the night. Admission is free for this. The festivities end on a high note with a Gospel Sing on Sunday morning from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Hermanson Center Lobby. Under Fire: The Battle of Harpers Ferry 1862: Oct. 30-31, Bolivar Heights Battlefield, Harpers Ferry

You are invited to witness the power of artillery that sealed the fate of the federal soldiers. The event interprets the Battle of Harpers Ferry and the surrender of the Union garrisoned town to southern forces under Gen. Stonewall Jackson. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park staff and volunteers will portray Union soldiers and present an artillery demonstration and program on Jackson’s capture of the 12,500-man Union garrison.
