 Tournaments at State Parks Courses Create Golf Interest

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A number of open golf tournaments are scheduled at Twin Falls and Pipestem state parks this summer into autumn, according to West Virginia State Parks Chief Ken Caplinger. “Many are organized by the pro shop staff to encourage area residents to enjoy a casual tournament format,” Caplinger said. “Some are annual invitational events that draw media attention.

The West Virginia State Park System has great golf opportunities for every golfer. Nine parks offer stay and play packages. Visit www.wvstateparks.com for information.

Twin Falls State Park Tournament 2011 Schedule
• June 18 – Parent – Child Scramble
• June 25 – Mixed Couples Scramble
• June 24 – 2-man Modified Alternate Shot
• Aug. 7 – Twin Falls Cup
• Aug. 15 – Twin Falls ‘Back to School’ High School Invitational
• Aug. 27 – 2-man Lefty-Righty Scramble
• Aug. 29 – End of Summer Skins Game – “From Gold Tees”

Twin Falls generates local golf interest through tournament formats. “Our scrambles and other golf play formats are lots of fun and open to anyone interested in playing golf,” said Brian Wetzel, Twin Falls golf professional. Pipestem Resort State Park Tournament 2011 Schedule
• May 16 – Public Employees Tournament – Registration for the WV Public Employees Tournament is posted on www.pipestemresort.com.
• June 10 – Homer Ball 4-man Team Tournament
• June 26 – Donna Howell Memorial Tournament
• Aug 9 – Youth With Drive Tournament – The Youth with Drive Tournament is open to Youth ages 10-17 and sponsored by Pipestem Resort State Park. The “Short Course” at Pipestem Resort will be the host site for the “Youth With Drive” Tournament. This tournament is a capstone event for youth golfers aged 10-17 and an open tournament for this age group. There will be a minimum of three divisions for players. Prizes will be awarded for each division of flight. The entry fee will be $8 per player
• Aug 13 – Pipestem Foundation Tournament
• Sept. 9, 10, 11 – Pipestem Invitational
• Pipestem also hosts a tournament day of the Beckley Newspaper Invitational August 6 and the Bluefield College of VA 4-man Public Tournament on August 15, 2011.
