MULLENS, W.Va. – For E.K. Via of Mullens, W.Va., it was the shot of a lifetime. Via hit a hole in one at Twin Falls State Park golf course May 9.
“The 4th hole is a par 3 and one of the prettiest views and holes on the course,” said Brian Wetzel, golf professional at the Wyoming County state park. “Via, who is 81, used an 8 iron from 132 yards for his ace,” said Wetzel. Area golfers witnessing the event were Stuart King and Roy Forren, both of Mullens. Via has been a season pass holder at Twin Falls for 41 years.
Twin Falls State Park is a 4,000-acre year-round vacation destination. The 1970s era 20-room lodge has been renovated and now features 47-rooms, an indoor guest swimming pool and fitness center, and expanded conference and dining services. The original golf course, designed by Geoffrey Cornish, opened in the late 1960s as a 9-hole course. The expansion to an 18-hole course occurred in the mid-1980s with holes 2 and 3, and 11-17 designed by George Cobb, Sr. Via’s hole-in-one on #4 was the original #2 hole.
It retains its original layout as an elevated tee shot with an extreme vertical drop.
Golf packages and daily play specials at Twin Falls golf course are available. Wetzel runs different specials each day to encourage ladies, seniors, youth and mid-week golfers to play the course. A variety of open golf tournaments are scheduled. Season passes are available at Cacapon, Pipestem and Twin Falls state park golf courses. The 2011 pass includes “Passport to Fun” booklet that rewards golfers with additional discounts for swimming, lodging and golf play.
