Charleston, WV- As college and high school students begin a new academic year, the West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration (WVABCA) is launching an “Enforcement Blitz” to prevent underage drinking. The WVABCA, in conjunction with local law enforcement and the West Virginia State Police, will conduct random compliance checks at 2,724 Class A (on-premise) and 1,986 Class B (off-premise) facilities or locations registered within the State, beginning September 1, 2011.
The “Enforcement Blitz” is part of a comprehensive campaign aimed at protecting West Virginia’s youth by sheltering them from the dangers of alcohol. Tragically, alcohol-related crashes are the leading causes of death among people ages 16 to 21 in the United States. By joining forces with other West Virginia law enforcement agencies, the WVABCA is confident their combination of enforcement activities and educational programs will have a positive impact on communities across the state.
WVABCA’s Enforcement Unit conducted the first “Enforcement Blitz” of the year during prom and graduation season.
Funding for this project is provided by the WVABCA and the Governor’s Highway Safety Program. Additional funding for compliance checks is provided through an Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws Grant with the West Virginia Division of Justice and Community Services which receives funding from the federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
