The West Virginia Department of Agriculture’s Regulatory and Environmental Affairs Division field staff were put on alert Saturday after the Kroger Co. announced a recall of a wide variety of pet food on fears that the products could contain aflatoxin, a substance produced by certain fungi that can grow on grains and become incorporated in finished food products which poses a health risk to pets. Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring toxic chemical by-product from the growth of certain fungi on corn and other crops.
“Field staff will work along with the Kroger Co. during their regular duties to ensure all affected product is removed from store shelves,” said West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass.
The severity of aflatoxin poisoning can vary widely, but people should consult a veterinarian if their pets exhibit sluggishness combined with a reluctance to eat, yellowish tint to the eyes and/or gums, and severe or bloody diarrhea. In severe cases, it can cause extreme liver damage. Customers who purchased a recalled item should return it to a store for a refund or replacement.
