Fairmont, W.Va. – Main Street West Virginia and West Virginia ON TRAC are hosting a two-day training conference on April 12 –13 in Fairmont. The training will teach basic social media skills and the application of social media in community development.
Training is free to Main Street West Virginia and ON TRAC members and volunteers. For non-members, a fee of $50 is due at time of registration. To register for the workshop or for more information on Main Street West Virginia/ON TRAC, call Stephanie Campbell at the West Virginia Development Office at 304-558-2234.
Tonya Hudson, executive director of Downtown Neighborhood Association in Elgin, Ill., will provide a hands-on, interactive approach to teaching social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and others. Using these tools, participants will also learn how to create and utilize social media content to enhance and promote their organization’s mission and engage their stakeholders.
Other workshops during the two-day session include “Capitalizing on Downtown: A Museum without Walls Approach” presented by Daniel Hoisington of Hoisington Preservation Consultants and “Social Media for Business Recruitment & Retention” presented by Kristi Trevarrow, executive director of Rochester, Michigan Downtown Development.
“We are excited to have Ms. Hudson, Mr. Hoisington and Ms. Trevarrow on hand to lend their expertise as we work to build capacity in our communities. We are fortunate to have dedicated and hardworking people in our communities who want to do great things, and are continuously looking for opportunities to refine their skills,” said Monica Miller, West Virginia Main Street manager.
Along with instructional workshops, the training provides an opportunity for Main Street West Virginia and West Virginia ON TRAC communities to network, problem solve and learn from each others’ accomplishments.
Main Street Fairmont will host the two-day training event, and Executive Director Vera Sansalone will be on hand to present downtown Fairmont’s many successes and current projects, including the launch of the city’s podcast.
The training coincides with the ExploreWV GeoChallenge, West Virginia’s official geocaching enthusiast group, launch of their second challenge,
Main Street® WV.
