CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The planned Macy’s Inc. fulfillment center in Martinsburg is among the winners for the 2011 Corporate Investment & Community Impact (CiCi) Awards, presented by Trade & Industry Development, a leading magazine dedicated to site selection.
“West Virginia is honored to have been selected for the Macy’s fulfillment center,” said Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin. “We are pleased to have Macy’s significance to our state being recognized by
Trade & Industry Development bestowing the Community Impact award.”
Hundreds of projects announced in 2010 from throughout North America were considered, according to the magazine’s editors, before the selection of the final 30 winners for the two categories. These projects will be highlighted in the March/April issue of
Trade & Industry Development.
Macy’s considered more than 150 sites before deciding to build its $150 million center in Martinsburg. The successful recruitment was the result of joint efforts of numerous officials and organizations, including the West Virginia Development Office, Berkeley County Development Authority and Berkeley County Commission.
Construction on the 1.3 million-square-foot facility is expected to begin in spring 2011. When fully operational in mid- 2012, the Martinsburg fulfillment center is expected to employ approximately 1,200 full- and part-time associates year-round. An additional 700 temporary seasonal associates are expected to be hired each year.
Trade & Industry Development judges projects in two categories. Corporate Investment projects are selected for the largest numbers in investment and jobs created or retained. The Community Impact category evaluates projects for positive impact on the community.
