DAVIS, W.Va. – New rooms at Canaan Valley Resort State Park are in the planning stage, but fall and winter visitors and groups at the four-season resort will not find their experiences disrupted this year. Fall foliage and scenic tours, golf play, and good winter weather for skiing are anticipated. “However, as for breaking ground for remodeling of the 1970s era lodge, that won’t happen until well into next year," said Parks Chief Ken Caplinger. “Before any construction can start, there is paperwork and coordination for planning a project of this magnitude.”
West Virginia’s first ski attraction is overdue for remodeling. “We are extremely pleased the West Virginia Economic Development Authority-approved bond issue included Canaan,” Caplinger said. “The four-season resort showcases winter sports in West Virginia. Over the years the park has brought new visitors and guests to the Tucker County area to enjoy year-round recreation at Canaan Valley State Park. While here, they also are introduced to area businesses, attractions, and the natural beauty of the area. Anything we do collectively to keep tourism active in ‘the valley’ is a win for West Virginia.
“Renovations are underway at other parks within the state park system, and that’s when we get calls from park visitors and groups with reasonable questions that need answers,” Caplinger continued. “We’ve had calls from skiers for this upcoming season wondering if the lodge at Canaan Valley and the ski facilities will be open. The answer is ‘yes.’ Groups using Canaan for meetings and conferences have called, and again, the answer is ‘yes.’ The resort operations remain fully open through this year, winter, and well into late 2011. And more importantly, even when under renovation, there will be 100-150 rooms available for rent.”
Park officials say the lodge, cabins, cottages, ski area, golf course, campground, restaurant, outdoor facilities and indoor swimming and fitness areas are open now and will remain open, including lodge rooms, throughout the construction.
Parks patrons have learned that the parks stay open, even during construction. For example, Twin Falls Resort State Park in Wyoming County has been under renovation for the past two years, modifying a 20 room lodge into a 47-room complex with indoor guest swimming pool, elevator, remodeling of the front desk area, gift shop and conference facilities.
“Our patrons didn’t abandon Twin Falls because of a little construction,” said Twin Falls Superintendent Scott Durham. “In fact, our occupancy in the lodge and cabins remained consistent throughout the progress. And those customers weren’t just the construction crews. Our lodge renovation created an even stronger customer base. We took care of our customers in a unique situation, kept people informed, used some price points, and most importantly, the staff made visitors part of our growth. When the new Cardinal wing at Twin Falls opens, we anticipate everyone will return again, and because they were part of our growth, they’ll tell others. Canaan Valley no doubt will experience the same area support and visitation. It is part of our state park history. People like to be involved in positive aspects of our state’s progress.”
When the renovation is completed at Canaan Valley Resort State Park, the lodge will showcase 150 rooms that open into interior hallways rather than to the outdoors, and will be more accessible. The project cost is approximately $21 million, which includes the total overhaul of the lodge accommodations and other customer service updates. Architectural plans, construction bids and purchasing documents are currently in various stages of the preparation and expenditure process.
