The Department of Administration today announced the Capitol Food Court is offering its patrons easy access to its daily menu selections, along with assisting in the identification of available healthy food choices.
A pre-recorded menu hotline is accessible at (304) 558-2328 ([304] 558-2EAT). This telephone line provides the menu entrée selections for the day and any other specials which may be offered.
In keeping with the mission of the West Virginia Healthy Lifestyle Coalition, Guest Services, Inc. (GSI), the operator of the Capitol Food Court, is dedicated to serving fresh, nutritious food selections. GSI’s “Fit &Trim” program features a variety of healthy selections designed by their executive chef to assist their customers in making informed decisions relating to their health. Their new state-of-the-art cooking technology allows the culinary staff to bake items that are commonly deep fried, such as fried chicken and French fries. The “Fit & Trim” logo on the menu signs at each food station (see right) provides valuable information to patrons on healthy food options that are low-fat, fat-free, low sodium, and all natural as well as vegetarian selections.
The West Virginia Healthy Lifestyle Coalition (WVHLC), chaired by First Lady Gayle Manchin, leads an initiative to assist individuals in understanding healthy lifestyle options. WVHLC facilitates such causes to champion its overall mission of promoting healthy lifestyles for all state residents particularly children, to give them the skills to offset growing epidemics, such as obesity, Type II diabetes and heart disease.
“The Capitol Food Court is an excellent eatery for our state employees and visitors, and thus, by promoting healthy food options, we are creating an important awareness to a large group of individuals,” said Mrs. Manchin. “In turn, these patrons may then pass along healthy eating practices to their children.”
The Capitol Food Court, which is located in the basement of the State Capitol, opened on January 10, 2007. The hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. for breakfast; 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. for morning snack; and 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. for lunch.
