Charleston, W.Va. – Governor Joe Manchin III signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) authorizing the WORKFORCE West Virginia Unemployment Compensation Division to accept federal funds to pay for up to 13 weeks of Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) benefits.
The bill adds an additional 13 weeks of unemployment benefits, beyond the 26 weeks of regular benefits, for qualifying individuals. Additional benefits became effective July 6, 2008.
Unemployed individuals who have an eligible claim with a benefit year ending on or after May 5, 2007, and who have exhausted regular benefits, may be eligible for EUC benefits. Qualifying individuals will be notified by mail and provided instructions on how to apply.
The Unemployment Compensation Division will begin notifying eligible claimants as soon as possible after detailed rules of eligibility are established by the DOL.
The EUC Bill (H.R. 2642) was passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by President George W. Bush on June 30, 2008.
Individuals should contact the WORKFORCE West Virginia office in Charleston at 304-558-2729 with questions regarding EUC or how to file for benefits.
