Charleston, W.Va. – The Division of Forestry (DOF) is praising three West Virginia students for their artwork supporting the theme “Trees Are Terrific…and Energy Wise!”
Steven Hoover of Kingwood Elementary took first place in the West Virginia Arbor Day Poster Contest.
Madison Pagan of Neale Elementary in Vienna placed second and Erin Guy of Wheeling’s Hilltop Elementary won third place.
All three are fifth-grade students.
Their work may be viewed on the DOF’s Web site,
www.wvforestry.com/arbor.cfm.
Partnership Coordinator Andy Sheetz said that the state contest is part of a national initiative to teach children about the benefits of trees. “Trees are an important part of everyone’s life. This year’s theme promotes the energy-wise benefits trees provide, including producing and conserving energy.”
Sheetz said that upon winning first-place in the West Virginia contest, Hoover’s poster was automatically entered in the National Arbor Day Poster Contest to represent the state. Hoover also will receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond provided by the West Virginia Forestry Association, and have a tree planted in his honor during a special ceremony at his school. Pagan and Guy also will be recognized with awards ceremonies at their respective schools. The dates of all those ceremonies are to be announced.
The contest is open every year to all public, private and home-schooled fifth-grade students in West Virginia.
